Why you should never trust a Mexican

Mexicans tell an average of four lies each day.

That is, in a nutshell, the conclusion of the most recent public opinion poll by Consulta Mitofsky, one of Mexico’s most prominent poll and research companies. The study, aptly named “La mentira cotidiana: una aceptada costumbre” (Our Daily Lie: An Accepted Custom) concludes Mexican men lie 4.2 times each day, while women “only” lie three times each day.

The reason? both men and women said they lie out of “dire need,” “to avoid problems,” or simply “for fun.” Of those who acknowledged telling lies, almost 62% said they lie to their friends; 34.9% to their partners; 33.1% to their colleagues; 24.3% to their bosses and 23.8% to their parents.

The survey, which took place in late January among 1,000 Mexican adults, has a margin of error of 1.8% … but what Mitofsky doesn’t say is: were they telling the truth?

  1. I found your link on my blog and laughed “Why you should never trust a Mexican” that is a striking heading. As a woman from Mexican heritage (born in OHIO) I only knew my family and did not know that many other Mexicans. I can tell you from personal experience that with my family “YES” they do lie! Lies told were to avoid problems and I can’t say fun, but then again it was fun for them who do the lying.

My family just didn’t like to tell the truth so as to not make waves, or as my mom would say. “Don’t upset the apple-cart” so just tell a white lie.

    Thanks for the laugh.

I am attending The Ohio State University and am a non-traditional freshman student. I have had to set up a blog for a class and my topic is “Machismo” and its effect on Mexican women from the 1800’s.

    Again, thanks for the laugh.

  2. Hmm it appears like your blog ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog.
I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to the whole thing. Do you have any tips for beginner blog writers? I’d definitely appreciate it.

  3. “There are lies, damned lies and statistics.”- Mark Twain. That is about the stupid shit, I have ever heard. So suddenly every Mexican who ever lived is a dirty liar. I suppose whoever wrote this is some American crying about immigrants coming and taking jobs, land, etc. And what is sad is at least we know who we (Mexicans) know our history. Little lesson here guy at least we are immigrating peacefully, not like your ancestors when they founded America.

    1. I work with mexicans. They lie 10x more than the blog says. They also play dumb. They are a parasite and a plague. You idiots left mexico cause american is better, why make this like mexico. I honestly know they don’t understand common sense. You Mexicans dont understand you bring down quality in American life. I own a ranch and have employed hundreds. All lie and play stupid. They can’t remember yesterday its sad

      1. Cameron, if they are so bad, do not hire them. Employ Vietnamese. As to lies, check The Washington Post, they keep track of your government officials’ lies

    2. There are several logical fallacies, but the fact that you respond with emotions and ad-hominem attacks is a major red flag and proof that what the author is saying is right. Put aside your puffed pride for a moment and think

You say “peaceful” when it hasn’t always been peaceful. And that’s not to mention “lawful”. The conquistadors weren’t the tree-hugging hippies you paint them out to be! There’s a reason Mexicans in their native lands don’t demand change (because the ruling elite will come down on them swiftly and brutally)

Please try to stay on topic

    1. I think my immigrant grandfather’s saying “as long as I have beans in my belly and a roof over my head, I’m happy” should offer a clue

  4. I have lived in Mexico for 3 years and can confirm, these people lie like it’s an acceptable part of life, about any and everything, little stuff that shouldn’t matter. And when you confront them, they won’t remember, play dumb, or just straight up gaslight you. This very morning I casually mentioned to my roommate to drink more water since it feels like 105 today. He tells me he has already drank 4 cups, which I know is a lie. I ask him where the cup is, as I washed the dishes. He pretty much says if I don’t believe him, what can he do about it? I calmly tell him there is no need to lie about such a small thing, I only wanted to help. He proceeds to get a cup from the cabinet and pour himself some water…

  5. I have learned the hard way to never do a business deal with a Mexican/Puerto Rican. They will lie, cheat and steal from you and when called out on it, they will explain how they need this money to maintain their status/2nd girlfriend etc. and you are a jerk for wanting your fair share.

Even worse is dealing with a Puerto Rican. I was staying at ones airbnb, that she ran as a money loosing hobby. She has a U.S. government job and was making 6 figures and I’d watch her squander it all to be the center of attention. The “successful business woman” with her hobby “finca”.

  6. I have to say, the times I’ve been screwed over the worst have always been at the hands of fellow Mexican-Americans. Now, this could have something to do with having associated mostly with them, but I do get the feeling had I *only* associated with white Anglos, the number of incidents would have been a lot lower (Northern European cultures are more ‘what you see are what you get’, and attitudes towards corruption, dishonesty, etc. are pretty radically different from Southern Europe and most the rest of the world)

It also gives you clues as to why a certain nation or community might struggle with getting ahead. If one is more concerned with taking advantage of others or avoiding being taken advantage of, it leaves a lot less room for productive activities. The focus is more on the here and now
