My Butt is Not Latina Enough

Speaking about culturally relevant modifications to products and services, I remember a press release I received the other day from Fiorana, an apparel maker from Fort Worth, Texas, announcing the launch of its first women’s “Latina Cut” line of jeans.According to the company’s founder and president Mike Braden, “The Latina body is different in waist and hip structure.” The conclusion? “When wearing Anglo cut jeans, there is always a fit problem around the waist area.”

What a relief! And to think that for a while — a long while — I thought my inability to squeeze into my Levi’s or Gap jeans had something to do with a recent trip to Mexico City, where I indulged in sopes and quesadillas as if there was no tomorrow. As it turns out, and according to Mr. Braden, the only reason Latino women like myself are having trouble fitting in their regular jeans is the result of our naturally and genetically-programmed bootylicious look.

I really have to disagree with you. I have Fiorana Jeans, and I love them. I have not had apair of absolutely perfect fitted jeans in like.. well forever!! I have had these jeans for a while. Let me make a list of what I love from these jeans. 1. I put them on in the am, by pm, they are exactly the way they were when I first put them on. 2. They are not so extremely long, that not even 6 inch heels work. 3. They are just not tight in my hip area and loose in my waist area. Comfortable all the way around. 4. Stylish, not the same boring thing, for the same boring life. LOL… I love my jeans. They are comfortable. But I guess the Latina in you, makes you want to not like these jeans….. That is in your genes i mean jeans!!!! I am a proud Chicana/Latina.. don’t hate me because I was blesses with all the right curves we latinas should have.

  4. Grrrrl! It’s about time a company really thought about this! It is odd that the “hour glass” shape doesn’t have more clothing made to fit it. Actually, I think there have been several companies in the last few years making changes in cuts to accomodate their customers. Look at Dereon by Beyonce and JLo by…JLo. For myself, I have def found that a little stretch in a jean goes a long way. 😉

    Latina and lovin it..
