Univision’s Nastassja Bolívar is Proof that You Can be Beautiful and Read Books, Consult Dictionaries

Nastassja Bolivar, the winner of Univision’s Nuestra Belleza Latina 2011 contest is proof that no matter how statuesque you are, there is always time for literature and language learning.

Throughout the competition, Bolivar had to grapple with a huge obstacle: Her lack of fluency in Spanish.

But she is doing something about it, holding books and dictionaries wherever she goes.

Watch her pose for the cameras while holding what looks to be The RAE Dictionary.

Congratulations, Nastassja! As your new employer would say: Es el momento

Arnie’s Mistress Not Really into Hispanic People

With all the talk about the gazillions of dollars The Governator (aka as The Fornicator) will have to pay for his imminent divorce, few people have paid attention on yet a more interesting debate going on behind the scenes of this Hispanic-Austrian-Californian telenovela (Californication?)

Turns out Arnold’s mistress Mildred Baena does not really like Hispanics.

In fact, she apparently goes around telling people that white people are better, and –judging from this undated picture– she thinks Santa Claus rules and the Reyes Magos suck.

Say what you will about Mrs. Baena, but at least she is consistent with her preferences. What better way to show you really, really hate U.S. Hispanics (i.e. yourself) than sleeping with Arnold Schwarzenegger?

That’s one consistent self-hating Latina!

What Nobody Has Told You About Don Browne’s Leaving Telemundo

Barely one minute after NBC Universal broke the news online about Don Browne’s retirement as head of Telemundo, hundreds of Tweets and Facebook messages (mostly by myself) propagated the news throughout the Web… So I’m not going to bother you with what you already know, but with what you don’t know. For instance: Did you know Mr. Brown will be riding into the sunset with La Reina del Sur?

Aha! Bet you didn’t know that. So you stay tuned and read the entire chisme in my upcoming articles for both Portada and Multichannel News.

Univision Realizes Not all Hispanics Eat Tamales, Speak Only Spanish, Watch Telenovelas

You can love or hate Univision; but one thing is certain: The message the network wants to send out to the world has changed radically from the years of Perenchio and his lieutenants, when talking about an English-speaking Latino was almost cause for termination of employment.

The Census might not bring about a revolution but someone at the 800-pound-gorilla has realized it is no longer Spanish only. Novelas only. Tamales only. When you have a population of 50.4 million people, you cannot assume everybody eats tamales or watches Univision’s nightly telenovelas. [I for one have very little tolerance for both.]

Now, Univision will have to work hard to change some of its programming to better reflect this so-called New America.

I’m just sayin’….

NBC Shows its True Multicultural Colors –and Spices

Remember my mun2 goody-bag full of hot salsas?

Not to be outdone, mun2 parent NBC Universal this morning showed its true multicultural colors by giving attendees to the launch of “Hispanics at NBCU” division a Mobile Food set, including 16 organic herbs + spices, plus wasabi, soy sauce and –what else?– a miniature Tabasco sauce.

Multiculturalism is so spicy and delicious!

At Last! A Call Against ‘José Luis Sin Censura’

I have been writing about Liberman’s Spanish-language programming for quite some time now, and was always appalled at the lack of response by mainstream media about the offensive nature of some of their programming.

Things might change soon.

Today the National Hispanic Media Coalition (NHMC) and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) filed a joint complaint with the FCC against Liberman Broadcasting, Inc. and KRCA, a broadcast television station serving the Los Angeles area. The complaint is in response to a string of broadcasts of the Spanish-language television talk show José Luis Sin Censura, which contains indecent, profane, and obscene material, offensive language, nudity, and on-air verbal and physical attacks against women as well as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

Watch for yourself (if you can stomach it, that is.)

U.S. Hispanics Brace for the Ominous Advent of Laura… [And it’s not Me]

U.S. Hispanics, rejoice: Starting today (Feb. 7) Laura Bozzo’s Laura talk show will launch on the TeleFutura network.

Bozzo has been torturing entertaining Latin American families for years, first in her native Peru (where not even a three-year house arrest took her show off the airwaves) and then on Mexico’s TV Azteca, with Laura de Todos. But this time, la señorita Laura is coming to the U.S. courtesy of Grupo Televisa, Univision’s partner and programming supplier.

The new show, which in Mexico is called Laura de México promises U.S. Hispanics a showcase of “real-world” family situations and, hopefully, some more avenging fights and coming out dramas exposing -and embarrassing- Latin America’s minimally-educated, lower classes like the one shown below.

Aren’t you glad television is embracing diversity?

I Would Like to Thank Mr. James May for Putting Speedy González on Twitter Map

I was just about to turn the page on the whole Top Gear brouhaha, when I bumped into James May on Twitter. Fake or real, he seems to be all upset and shit because Mexicans keep complaining.

I am not going to get into the whole “how-to-tell-the Brits-they-have-no-right-to-talk-about-shit-food” thing… Basically, I’d just like to encourage him (or whoever it is posing as him) to continue his Mexican-themed tweets. I can’t wait to see #speedygonzalez as trending topic.

Ajúa!

Watch Some Brits Making Derogatory Comments about Mexicans [and Thinking They’re Funny]

Yeah, if Mexicans were to develop a sports car, we will call it a fried tortilla or something like that… But maybe we won’t because -according to these not-so-bright-nor-funny BBC commentators- all we Mexicans do is sleep, sleep and then sleep some more.

I hear the Mexican government is asking the BBC for an apology, which is OK, I guess.

As for me, I would go a little farther and ask them instead to learn to be genuinely funny, like some Brits can actually be.

Watch NFL Latino Superstar Mark Sanchez Treat Teammate as Human Tissue

Yeah… This is just what we needed to get the U.S. media say more nice things about us, The Mexicans.

Watch Latino NFL superstar Mark Sanchez pick his nose and then wipe a booger on teammate Mark Brunell Sunday night… [all while losing 19 to 24 to the Steelers in what could have been their ticket to the Super Bowl XLV.)

I recall seeing plenty of Kleenex growing up in Mexico. I swear.

De Niro Preps New Film: ‘The Deported’

It didn’t take long for Latino activists and other minority media vigilantes to slam actor Robert De Niro for what they deemed a racist remark last night at the Golden Globes Awards ceremony: In trying to be funny, the actor mumbled something about waiters -and Javier Bardem- not being there because they were deported… or something.

Watch it and judge for yourself… As for me, I am not really offended as a Latina or even an immigrant… I’m mostly offended as a funny person: I think my jokes about deported people are waaaaaaay funnier. But, hey, that’s just me!
