September 19 Strikes Mexico Again; Hilarity Ensues

Today’s 7.6 magnitude quake came on the same day as devastating quakes in 1985 and 2017.

Nope, I’m not making this up. Today, Monday, September 19, 2022, at around 1:07 pm local time, Mexico City residents were shaken (not stirred) by a 7.6 magnitude earthquake, that killed at least one and damaged a lot of buildings across several states.

I first learned about it not on Twitter, but on the family WhatsApp that was going nuts with voicemail notifications from my brother and sister sounding really really scared. The first message, from my brother, came through at 2:08 pm/EST and it simply said “Está temblando,” two words any born and raised Mexican knows all too well.

Then came my sister with a 7-second message saying it was really fucking bad and then I sort of panicked.

I had been in transit but as soon as I got home I called to make sure they were OK. Thankfully, everyone was unscathed. Scared shit still, but unharmed.

Barely 7 or 8 minutes later, the memes started pouring in. It was – once again – my people’s way of dealing with calamities, from highlighting the HUGE coincidence of the September 19 date to celebrating the inevitability of our demise.

I’m just gonna post a few examples below to give you an idea of what’s going on today post-sismo, but feel free to follow this blogger’s Twitter feed to keep up in real time.

Justin Trudeau Goes to Mexico; Hilarity Ensues

A bromance months in the making…

It was brief –and hilarious.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau this week visited Mexico, partly to address the bilateral agenda, discuss the future of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA,) and –very likely– to discuss El Loco.

But at some point, during a speech to the Mexican senate, a photographer captured the above image, which of course was crafted into beautiful meme art form.

As I said yesterday: Mexican Twitter never disappoints, so here are only a few of the many images that made the rounds on Twitter Friday afternoon after the great @Vampipe invited his followers to chip in their own ideas.

How a Quinceañera Party in Mexico Became a Viral Sensation

xv

OK you might have no idea who any of these people are, but thanks to Facebook, the Ibarra Family from San Luis Potosí, Mexico might be hosting the biggest fiesta in the history of YUUUUGE FIESTAS.

After the proud father of a quinceañera named Ruby uploaded a video (below) on his Facebook page inviting “the community” to his daughter’s party, Mexicans started to respond “Yes, I’m attending.” The reason? Instead of picking a group of friends and/or family, the dad posted it as a Public Post, thus inviting every single soul to the bash on December 26, 2016.

At press time, over 994,000 people had already signed up to attend Ruby’s Quinceañera. (This blogger included, of course!)

Mexican Reporter Goes to Flood Area, Asks Locals to be Carried to Avoid Water. Hilarity Ensues

sopitasA reporter in Mexico went to cover massive floods happening in Puebla, and was caught by another reporter being carried by the locals, obviously in an effort to, well, not get wet.

The original tweet (below) from reporter José Daniel Hernández simply read: “How embarrassing! @LydiaCumming, a reporter with @TVAztecaPuebla asks for help in order not to get wet.”

What followed, naturally, was a flood of tweets that have this blogger dying of laughter. Below some of my favorites. (Apologies in advance if I do not credit each one of these properly, but Twitter can be a free-for-all stealing thing.)
