Mexicans ‘Quieren’ Taco Bell… Do They?

Aren’t Mexicans lucky? Not only they will now have access to Ugly Betty, but they will be able to enjoy the show while savoring a delicious… tacostada from Taco Bell!

The company, a unit of Yum Brands, this week said it will return to Mexico after a failed attempt 15 years ago, in hopes of establishing up to 300 franchises in the country. But don’t think it will get away with murder: Taco Bell has said that what they call “tacos” here in the U.S. (those hard-shell yellow things probably made in China) will be called “tacostadas” south of the border … see? it’s because we know what a taco looks like!

Steve Pepper, Taco Bell’s general manager in Mexico, insists the company doesn’t pretend to insult Mexicans by selling its products as “typical.” In fact, Mr. Pepper informs us the menu will use the word “spicy,” not “picante,” –which coming from a guy called Pepper should give the information some kind of credibility.

Ay, ay, ay, yo no quiero Taco Bell!

  1. Es cierto, ya empezaron a llegar los Taco Bell, lo mejor es que en Monterrey no han aparecido, pues me va a dar mucho coraje verlo lleno. Será una tristeza que eso llegara a ocurrir.

  2. Well, I’ve seen more than one Mexican eating at Taco Bell. They’d rather go there than eat non-mexican food. I’ve had a Mexican creative director once, we ate mexican every single day.

  3. I currently work at an ad agency in Mexico City, and I went to interview at another agency (which I will not name here) to handle the Taco Bell account. When they told me what account it was for, I thought they were joking, but they said it was true: Taco Bell was coming to Tacoland.
I never took the job and from what I’ve heard they’ve had trouble negotiating certain things with the client, but as of yet, there aren’t any Taco Bells to be seen.

Although, I must say… having grown up in California, I ate more than my share of Taco Bell in my teens and I probably would visit once in a while just for nostalgic reasons. Obviously for tacos it won’t be a match with the incredible choices we have here.

  4. Taco Bell is good, simple, cheap food in an air conditioning envrionment. I’m sure they’ll do great. Look at the success of Starbucks in Mexico. It’s not as if Latino’s don’t have great coffee, they just happen to like exotic things. Taco Bell is “exotic” in Mexico, no one can deny that.

  5. As one of the “Mexican immigrants” that you write about in one your entries, I would like to say that it is people like you who are causing us so many problems by constantly bashing the United States and Americans while you insist on living here. If you hate it here so much, why don’t you leave? By going on so much about how bad the US is, an “immigrant” like you, who is of the class in Mexico who has forced us to leave (the priveledged class, who keep the haves and have nots desperately separate) by coming here, insisting on staying here, and yet badmouthing the country that took you in, you make it harder for people like us to get by here. Either shut up or leave. And by the way, the little piece that you wrote about us above (I will leave it to you to decide which story it is) is filled with wrong information.

  6. I agrre with Carlitos here:

“It’s like bringing ice to the Arctic,” complained pop culture historian Carlos Monsivais.

although I must say it would be a really bad ice they’d be bringing.
