Who is offending who?

Now that the Mexican government has decided to “fully” investigate Paulina Rubio for potentially “desecrating” the Mexican flag… it might also want to spend the same energy and television air-time in investigating Mr. Vicente Fox for alledgedly robbing us blind and leaving us more naked that Rubio herself.

The details of the so-called investigation into Paulina’s posing are now becoming ridiculous: press reports have quoted Director of Democratic Culture and Civic Promotion (don’t you love this title?) Jose Castillo saying Paulina Rubio’s photos [published on Cosmopolitan magazine] must be examined to see whether the article in question is a genuine flag, apparently the only circumstance on which it would be considered an offense.

If you ask me, Paulina can pose naked wherever and however she wishes. My ‘patriotism’ would not be hurt. It would be painful, though, to find out you can still get away with embezzlement, and then make cheerful appearances on U.S. television.

  1. There are a couple of things here that merit a comment. First, if la Rubio used a real flag is ilegal and as such should be prosecuted; it’s the law.

Second, nobody has brought charges agains Fox; therefore, until someone presents facts there’s no crime. No matter what we think or feel, it is the law.

  2. This reminds me a the Clinton scandal years back in which money and resources were used to investigate his relationship with Monica Lewinsky instead of focusing on real problems of corruption within the US government. Now as Mexico makes a ‘Valiant stance’ against this ‘desecration’ it is also an obvious attempt to detract from real issues dealing with present day Mexico.

And just as a side note, I personally don’t like Pau Pau but come on people she took a picture with a flag to look sexy for a magazine. It’s not like she took a picture of herself burning it! Keep things in perspective, no sean tan llorones!

  3. Hey Laura,
Saludos de Chicago.Your item reminds me of what happens around here just about every year as El Grito approaches. The consul general makes the rounds of the Spanish-language TV newscasts to sternly admonish any people who are thinking about driving around with a big Mexican flag wrapped on the hood of their car or wildly waving it in traffic. This is not done in Mexico, he (and it’s always a he) says. We have too much respect for the flag. So imagine my shock when I was in Mexico City one time for El Grito and saw hundreds of cars with flags wrapped on their hoods and roofs, and hundreds honking and wildly waving the flag. Reforma suddenly felt just like West 26th Street in Villita.

  5. Respect for a flag shoudln’t be taken to the extreme. What’s next? You can’t wear a T-shirt with the flag of a country? This isn’t flag burning, or taking a piss on the flag. Many have done what Paulina has done. It is sexy and patriotic.

—What Clinton did was corruption, in Latin America we’re so used to our politicians lying and stealing that we don’t care who they have affairs with. In America they expect a public servant to behave as good as he’d be expected to behave in the private sector. I’ve seen CEO’s fired for what Clinton did. Frankly, Clinton is no hero, the feminist movement chosed to ignored his adventures because he’s pro-abortion, but the reality is that he has had sex and perhaps raped many women.

The reality is that if instead of Monica Lewinsky he had messed around with Manuel Lewinsky, his ass would have been impeached.

  6. Besides having a lot of wasteful time in his hands, an essential prerequisite for Mexican Ministers of State, it´s obvious that the Mexican Minister for Flag Desecration is just as clueless regarding his proposed charges against Paulina Rubio.

Señor Ministro: There is no Paulina Rubio. Anyone who has ever looked for Rubio, Shakira, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera together, at any event, can clue the Minister that none of these so-called celebrities exist. They are the figments of the imagination of feverish publicists. Poorly cloned Madonnas. As such they are prone to cheap publicity gimmicks such as wrapping flags, crucifixes and other controversial items in, on and around themselves in pathetic attempts to peddle their sounds. A wise Minister would change his tune. Not this guy. He is another clone.

  7. Vi a la tipa, vi la bandera, vi el águila… y no vi el nido. Chin. Ja-ja. Saludos, Marco.
