I watched this commercial for the first time Sunday night (during the NBC broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards) and then it hit me: technology will always be there for us, no matter how challenged, ignorant or forgetful we become as a result of, well, all these technological advances.
Don’t know the capital of a major Latin American country? No worries! Your cellphone company will make sure to get you out of a jam.
Technology is great. It makes our lives easier and more exciting. However it comes with a cost. Do kids even know what an encyclopedia is (no not Wikipedia)? Do kids even read books nowadays (no no Kindle)? Do kids even want to learn to play an instrument (no not Guitar Hero)? I mean there are now video games that simulate you going for a jog.
I mean, it’s not like the friend is asking for the capital of Kazakhstan… Jesus!
Amazing that this continuing geographical illiteracy is presented as something normal, rather than something shameful.
