National Latino Media Coalition Thinks ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX Not Diverse. Thank God for Hispanic TV

This week the National Latino Media Coalition (NLMC) scolded the nation’s top broadcast networks for not embracing diversity (i.e. mostly for failing to employ more Latinos in front of and behind the camera.) In a press conference on Tuesday in Los Angeles, Alex Nogales, president & CEO of the NLMC said that:

“This was a terrible year for Latinos at the networks. African Americans and Asian Pacific Americans posted impressive gains in most categories, but when it came to Latinos, the networks failed us. Don’t misunderstand, we don’t want what African Americans and Asian Pacific Americans received, the pie is much larger than that, we only want what we deserve as the largest minority consumer population in the nation.”

Well said, Mr. Nogales! But I wouldn’t hold my breath too long if I were you… Last time I checked, even the main Hispanic networks insisted on drawing their top talent from some sort of Swedish incubator.

Univision Celebrates ‘Día de los Muertos’ by Killing ‘El Show de Cristina’

After more than 20 years on the air, Univision’s long-running talk show El Show de Cristina is coming to an end. The final episode will air tonight @10 PM (ET) .

The famous Cuban-American host said she was let go for being ‘vieja.’ Yet, she also anticipated “new and exciting” projects, including a TV show coming in the spring.

No word yet on when Sábado Gigante will get the ax, though if you asked me, I think Don Francisco has stamina for another 50 years.

Eva Luna’s Secret is Out: Pizzas, Phones and Cars

SPOILER ALERT: Attention, telenovela fans, if you prefer to be pleasantly surprised Monday night, please don’t read this post.

Turns out the “secret” behind Univision’s much-hyped upcoming Eva Luna is finally out: According to The Hollywood Reporter, the telenovela, which will premiere Nov. 1, will give viewers plenty of product placements by marketers including General Motors, Domino’s Pizza and T-Mobile.

That way, Hispanic TV viewers will be able to savor the wonders of advertising even before -and after- watching the actual commercials.

Isn’t that just freaking dandy?

The Astrologer Formerly Known as Walter Mercado Now Wants You to Call Him Shanti Ananda

I am sure you are too busy these days to take notice of real important news, so allow me to fill you in on a major development.

Starting today, you might want to refer to the famous Puerto Rican astrologer, caped TV personality of dubious gender Walter Mercado as Shanti Ananda. Why? Because while we were snoozing over our boring jobs and ending our pathetic work days in some local pub, Mr. Mercado had a revelation: a mystical voice in his dreams asked him to change his name to Shanti Ananda and help the poor people of Puerto Rico.

Not sure yet if Shanti will continue to entertain us with his fancy apparitions on Spanish-language TV. He (or she?) will be greatly missed.

Unbelievable But True: Inés Sainz Sets Journalistic Goals for Herself [Sort of]

Mexican playmate-guanabee sports reporter Inés Sainz was so traumatized about her infamous “incident” last month at the NFL locker room that she has decided to set herself some “ground rules” in order to go back to work.

First order of business: She will not be conducting interviews in men’s locker rooms, which is, like, a great start!

So, how about setting a higher goal for yourself, Inés, and just go work as playmate or stripper or something? That way she will be doing us all a big favor.

Watch the video below for a full display of Inés’ journalistic abilities.

Rubio Wants English-Only Policies. Yet, Finds Spanish Convenient to Pander to Hispanics

Florida’s GOP Senate nominee Marco Rubio has taken any chance possible to say that English should be the official language of the United States. He is also well known for his hard line rhetoric against immigration.

Yet, when it comes to winning votes among Hispanics, the son of Cuban immigrants has not missed the opportunity to speak, well, in Spanish, the language of Cuban immigrants.

Mexican Wins Miss Universe Title. Americans Fret Over How Many Babies She’ll be Dropping

Despite the above costume (or perhaps because of it) a young Mexican holds the title of this year’s Miss Universe. A native of Guadalajara, Jimena Navarrete is only 22 and expected to move to New York City some time soon… So, we can only guess she’ll have plenty of time to start dropping a lot of little brown creatures around.

Take that, Brewer, Arpaio & Co.!

Salma Wants You to Help Mexico, Because She Is Too Busy Living Between Paris and Beverly Hills

Mrs. Hayek-Pinault set some time aside in her busy agenda to star in this spot (filmed in Los Angeles) advising her paisanos to stop complaining and help Mexico become, like, a better place.

“Don’t ask what Mexico can do for us but what we can do for Mexico,” says Salmita in her cute accent. Though I really think she meant to say “what YOU can do for Mexico,” because last time I checked she was quite busy commuting between two homes, one in Paris and the other one in Beverly Hills.

Gracias, Salmita, we’ll do -and keep you posted!

OMG! Even Jorge Ramos Thinks His Skin Color Could Get Him into Trouble in Arizona

If you are still unconvinced about how bad things are in Arizona, consider this. Even our very own Jorge Ramos, Univision’s cute-as-a-button, blond and blue-eyed news anchor, fears he could be stopped in Arizona because of the color of his skin.

In his Aug. 2 syndicated column, Ramos expressed a little relief about Judge Susan Bolton issuing an injunction to suspend some of the most controversial parts of the SB1070 Law:

“[…] Otherwise, I would not have felt quite as comfortable walking in downtown Phoenix the other day without my passport or driver’s license. Some police officers’ suspicions might have been aroused by my brown skin and slight accent…”

Not sure about the accent thing -yet- but if you think you look a bit browner than this guy, be afraid, be very afraid!

South Africa, South America, Same Difference…

A picture circulating the Internet shows a screen shot of Chicago TV’s channel WGN-9 during a broadcast of the recent World Cup in South Africa, featuring a map of South America labeled “South Africa.”

I have not been able to find the actual broadcast, but a comments page on Chicago’s News at Nine still shows some viewer’s comments regarding the blunder.

Upon reading about this geographic mistake, I could not help but wonder: in its tireless search for Osama Bin Laden, are Americans looking in the right continent? [I mean, I’m just asking…]
