Robert Ellis, a Houston-native, has written a song about the deliciousness of…. Topo Chico, that other Mexican import that –along with avocados– has swept Americans off their feet.
The song is called –what else?– Topo Chico and it’s, well, an ode to the greatness that is a freshly-opened bottle of Topo Chico … with a little bit of lime.
If you are not Hispanic or –like me– are not a fan of rap, chances are you have never heard of Chingo Bling, but he has a new single out and it has the best title ever. They Can’t Deport Us All features a comedic take on the always exciting Migra vs. Mexicans action at the border. (According to several press reports, there are people who were not pleased by the name of this album, but what are you going to do?)
The lyrics are also funny –and racy– as hell. Take a listen and remember: They Can’t Deport Us All.
This is what happened. On Wednesday morning, Sweden beat Mexico 3-0, but Mexico managed to advance to the next round of the 2018 World Cup because Germany was eliminated after falling 2-0 to South Korea on the same day.
This, of course, made it for a massive Mexican-Korean party worldwide that I’m sure will last all day long –and probably will go on for the long weekend and until the next Mexico game (Monday, July 2.)
As soon as the news of the German defeat broke, Mexicans in the stadium started to chant and hug each other even when their team was losing 3-0 to Sweden and was clear it will never recover. Chilangos in Mexico City, meanwhile, took to the streets and marched all the way to the South Korean embassy to thank Koreans for “their service” in the most awesome way; singing the popular Cielito Lindo, bringing gifts to the Korean Ambassador and lifting random Koreans in arms and cheering them on. ¡Hermano, coreano, ya eres mexicano!
Similar scenes were recorded everywhere, from New York to Moscow and from Los Angeles to Seoul.

This blogger’s favorite Peruvian artist is back on the scene, this time with a video filmed in Iquitos, Peru cheering for Peru’s National Soccer team and –for the most part– thanking coach Ricardo Gareca for taking the team to a World Cup after so many years! (36 to be precise.)

Tired of having Colombia being portrayed as a country plagued by drug violence and prostitution, two Colombian enterprises and the Medellín City Hall have joined forces to launch The Colombian Ambush, an online campaign aimed at showing the world the real Colombia, one that has given us many great things, including “Gabo,” one of the world’s greatest writers.
The campaign will live exclusively online and is being crafted by Dallas-based Dieste. A series of videos have been directed by Simón Brand and use the typical Colombian stereotype to fight … the Colombian stereotype.
InPatrón, for example, we are presented with a scene very similar to Season I of Narcos, the Netflix sensation about the bloody era of the Pablo Escobar years. But instead of witnessing an exchange of drugs –or weapons– we see men exchanging books… books by the great García Márquez.
Watch as a very unusual patrón scolds his men for not bringing La Hojarasca.

I’m not sure this thing was even conceived with carne asada or Cinco de mayo in mind, but who the hell cares? We are fast approaching this blogger’s favorite faux-Mexican holiday.

Campeche is not only one of my favorite Mexican states; it is also the force behind a deliciously bizarre government advertising campaign to help raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
Using the slogan HIV doesn’t kill; discrimination does, the government of Campeche has tapped none other than Darth Vader and a stormtrooper to help raise awareness of the virus, and urge citizens to attend the Capasits (a chain of ambulatory, educational centers to help people understand HIV and learn tips on prevention and other issues.)
Because, honestly… What else can be more impactful than the good ol’ Star Wars folks telling you to take care of yourself?
‘Like’ is a sequel to the super popular teen telenovela ‘Rebelde’
In an effort to lure the elusive teen audience, Mexico’s Grupo Televisa is working to bring us Like (Yes, Like as in “me gusta”) a teen telenovela that promises to “forever revolutionize” the novela genre.
And what kind of a revolution are we talking about here exactly?
“The goal is to introduce Internet and connectivity into the realm of telenovelas,” said producer Pedro Damián in an interview with Mexican television, explaining that –unlike your regular telenovela, Like is going to be a “multiplatform” one, because it will not only take place on TV, but on Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook and all that jazz.
But if none of the above is revolutionary enough for you, keep in mind this thing will take place in a “multiethnic school,” and feature kids from, like, a lot of countries and continents, that speak many languages, and… blah, blah, blah…
Nash Edgerton, an Australian director you probably never heard of, has been hard at work promoting the upcoming premiere of Gringo, a movie about gringos in Mexico (presumably) that, for some reason, features mostly South African and Australian actors.
Starring David Oyelowo, Joel Edgerton and Charlize Theron, Gringo is described as “a dark comedy with dramatic intrigue,” in which a gringo joyrides across the border into Mexico, “where all is not as it seems for mild-mannered American businessmen.”
SIGH…
Anyhow… The official poster says it all (above), but if you are a member of the brown-skinned race and feel underrepresented… WORRY NOT! The folks over at the #GringoMovie promos have made a special poster to appeal to the brown masses. It features the two Mexicans available.

Avocados from Mexico is back on the Super Bowl advertising game with #GuacWorld, its latest TV commercial that is scheduled to make its official debut Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 during the Big Game in Minneapolis.
The spot imagines a domed paradise called GuacWorld, where everything is perfect, with serene music, free massages, wellness gurus —and all the guacamole you can eat. But there’s one problem: The chips are outside… OUTSIDE! so everyone freaks out and mayhem ensues.
Luckily, a breakthrough revelation happens: Avocados and guacamole can be used in hamburgers, salads, sliders and, of course, toast…
The spot is not nearly as adorable as that of 2015 (remember the polar bear clad in mariachi gear voting for Mexico?) but it does a good job highlighting the ridiculousness of what the human race has become –in light of the avocado craze. WATCH.
Delfín Hasta el Fin, Wendy Sulca and La Tigresa de Oriente want you to go dance in Israel.
With president Donald Trump’s “bold, historic decision” to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, this blogger could not help but reminisce over that other bold, historic –and truly bizarre– move made by three of Latin America’s tackiest stars to help praise Israel as an awesome tourist destination, and not a place one should be afraid of because of the killings and all.
En tus tierras bailaré (In Your Land I Will Dance) features Andean superstars La Tigresa del Oriente, Wendy Sulca and Delfín Hasta el Fin, and while it was released in 2010, it continues to gain popularity. At the time of this writing, the video had gone way over the 4.6 million views on YouTube.
I’m not sure how these three got together to help promote tourism in Israel, but I must admit the chorus is quite catchy.

Awww, Mexico, the land of the surreal and pure awesomeness…
In the latest political faux pas, a local politician in the state of Tlaxcala thought it was a great idea to copy, almost verbatim, a speech by the super evil Frank Underwood, of House of Cards.
In a short video posted on his Facebook account, Miguel Ángel Covarrubias, repeats one of Underwood’s most famous speeches, calling for “opening doors and closing paradigms” to end up in a dramatic: “The past has brought us here, and here is only the beginning of a great story.” Which I believe refers to the fifth season of House of Cards.
Anyhow, while Covarrubias defended himself from the criticisms saying the copy was “intentional,” Netflix responded in style by using another evil character from House of Cards, Doug Stamper, to reprimand the Mexican politician … in his own language:
“Imitation is not always the best form of flattery”
